![]() I just finished my 12th interview two months ago.Įvery interview is with a different person, so you are forced to rush through your “story” faster & faster everytime, while none of them care. If I could give anyone advice, stay away from Toptal. It's kind of like a "rich get richer" type deal. If you're already established (and have the portfolio to prove it), then you'll do well on Braintrust. Overall, it's a great platform, just really hard to get into / get the most out of if you're inexperienced. The application process is quite simple (they don't waste days of your time like Toptal). ![]() Some of the highest payouts Ive ever received have come from Braintrust. ![]() The clients are legitimate and have healthy budgets to spend. The team there is actually genuinely interested in helping you succeed(financial incentives are aligned). ![]() You don't have much leverage with the jobs - they're high-paying staff augmentation mostly (not strategic hires), and clients can choose to exit the relationship at the drop of a hat. They just took 10M$ in investment money, and that's likely going to force them to commoditize their labor too quickly. If your portfolio isn't banging, it will take you a very long time to land new work on Braintrust. "send us referalls and we'll give you 100BTRUST instead of cash.") The BTRUST token seems more like a gimmick rather than an actual way of controlling the platform (i.e. You have to negotiate aggressively to get more amenable terms. You didn't mention their payment terms, which are almost always very unfavorable to talent (net 30-60). As a small-scale bootstrapped organization I doubt they’ll fall into the trap of growing too fast, and from what I’ve read of fellow dev reviews, as senior devs you can find great opportunities to work with top clients there. I found the fact that they offer transparent rates to clients keeping only 20% as commission so much more considerate than Toptal. But they also have an international talent platform called Unicorn.Dev where senior devs and designers from anywhere in the world can sign up (after completing the vetting process) so they can work with US clients with a time zone overlap of 4 hours. Cloud specializes in offering Latin Am-based senior tech talents to their US clients in order to provide time-zone alignment. One platform I think you should be adding into this mix is Cloud Devs which is a close Toptal competitor. But for a platform that claims to be “one that is user-owned”, the fact that they’re taking millions in VC funding makes you think they’ll soon be like the rest of them. Braintrust appears to be the least intimidating to interview with. And keeping 50% as their cut is absurd IMO!Īs for 10X & Braintrust, I must say it’s been difficult to find genuine reviews online. But I was kind of taken aback to hear their pay scale is between $40-100/h considering their extensive vetting process & their claim to have the top 3% talent. Toptal is undoubtedly the biggest name on here. I’ve been looking into similar platforms that offer vetted talent lately (tired of the low-quality clients available on Upwork, Fiverr etc.) If that goes well, then you’re in, and you’ll start getting emails once in a while for potential gigs. Check your linked in contacts properly (build them if you have a poor network), maybe you already know someone that’s part of the network.Īs for the process to join the network one you’re in the pipeline, it’s a fairly simple process, you’ll have a call with the founder to ensure you have the right communication style (communication is the most important thing in 10x), and if that goes well, you’ll have another interview with an engineer. So essentially, if you want to get in, you need to both be talented and know someone on the inside that can refer you and vouch for you. As 10x comes from entertainment talent management, they view relationships as extremely important. That’s probably pretty disappointing reading this after I tell you about their amazing clients and rates.but well… there may be another way. ![]() Essentially, they’ll be the ones reaching out to you if you’re a truly great engineer or you’re very well known. They make that very obvious as they don’t even have a form to apply as talent. ![]()
